How Many Residency Programs Do Med Students Apply To (The Answer Is Higher Than Youââ¬â¢d Think!)
Click here to view the full infographic! 1376 fourth-year med students from 20 schools were surveyed about the number of residency programs they had applied to. According to AMA Wire, the study, which was published in Academic Medicine, ââ¬Å"was able to look at the influence of career specialty choice and other factors on the activities of graduating medical students.â⬠Here are some highlights from the study: â⬠¢ Students interested in the following specialties applied to the most programs: internal medicine (20.7%), surgery (18.8%) and pediatrics (14.6%). â⬠¢ Students applied to the fewest programs when they were interested in psychiatry (5.1%) and radiology (3.8%). â⬠¢ 94.8% of students matched to a program in their chosen specialty. Another point from the AMA Wire article: ââ¬Å"Amid concerns ofà a predicted physician shortage,à the stakes of a med studentââ¬â¢s final year are high ââ¬â both personally and for the patient population. In a time when a growing percentage of students have found themselves unmatched in training limbo, securing a residency spot and preparing for training is understandably the top priority for fourth-year students, evident in the number of programs to which they apply for residency.â⬠Are you applying to a competitive residency or fellowship program?
